Essential Information

TREATMENT OF EXCESS SWEATING (HYPERHIDROSIS)

If you suffer from excess underarm sweating (hyperhidrosis), anti-sweat injections may be the answer for you, particularly if you have tried other treatments and found them to be unsatisfactory.

Anti sweat Injections can work by blocking the release of acetylcholine, the chemical which activates the sweat glands. This is a life-altering procedure for those suffering from excess sweating. Previous treatments for excessive sweating were often ineffective, short acting or had significant risks.  For those suffering from excessive sweating, these anti-sweating injections give improved results where other treatments have disappointed.

How do the injections work?
Small doses of a toxin known to block the actions of the nerves that supply the eccrine glands are injected just below the skin in the underarm.  This prevents the glands from producing sweat. This blocks the nerve endings but over about 6-12 weeks new nerve endings grow to replace them.

Consultations and treatment
The doctor at PURE has been trained in the use of Botox to treat excess underarm sweating. A free initial consultation is provided to discuss the treatment and answer any questions. If suitable for treatment, a further appointment is made for the treatment itself. A follow-up consultation is also made to assess the effect of the treatment.

The treatment
A course of injections to treat auxiliary sweating takes a total of around 30 minutes to 1 hour. Clinical studies have shown that this treatment reduces the amount of sweating by 75-80% and a course usually lasts on average 6-7 months.

Is it safe?
Yes. Only injections which are licensed in the UK are used. They are administered by a qualified doctor only after initial consultation and diagnosis.

Where does the sweat go?
The rest of the body compensates and ensures an even distribution.

Is it painful?
Minimal discomfort can be experienced. Because the skin of the armpit is thin, injections there are barely felt. The needles used are extremely fine, and are not felt much, but the injection itself stings slightly.

How quickly does it work?
Different people have different response times to treatment. Some patients may notice the effect occurring in less than two weeks.

Repeat treatments
The injections do not cure hyperhidrosis; your symptoms will return gradually. Follow-up injections are required to maintain dryness. These repeat injections may be necessary at intervals varying from six to sixteen months.

Cost
The cost of treatment is £400 which includes an initial consultation, the treatment and a follow-up consultation.

Consultation and treatment is by appointment.  Appointments are available on Tuesday evenings at PURE Spa Ocean Terminal, Thursday evenings at PURE Lothian Road and Wednesdays at PURE Spa Silverburn Glasgow.  Click here to book your appointment.
