FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS

On this page, we have sought to answer some of the questions that we are asked from time to time about specific treatments at PURE.  If you have any questions that are not answered below, or have any queries relating to any of our products or services, please do not hesitate to contact us and one of our team will be on hand to help.

WAXING

What do I wear for a bikini wax?
In a normal bikini wax, you keep your own knickers on throughout the treatment.  You will be shown how to stretch your skin by the therapist to ensure that the hairs are removed correctly and to minimise any discomfort.

What happens in a Brazilian?
In a Brazilian bikini wax, the hair is removed much further in and under, leaving a thin strip all the way round.  The Brazilian is deal for thong wearers.  In a Brazilian treatment you keep your own knickers on and you will be shown how to stretch your skin by the therapist to minimise any discomfort.

Does it hurt to have a bikini wax?
Most people experience a mild discomfort during any type of waxing, and bikini areas are similar.  At PURE, our therapists are trained to minimise any discomfort as much as possible by the use of particular stretching techniques and correct use of wax to ensure that any waxing is as pain free as possible.  If you are concerned about discomfort, you can take painkillers prior to your visit which may help – Ibuprofen is the best, but please ensure that you take all painkillers according to the instructions or on the advice of your doctor.

What happens in a Hollywood?
In a Hollywood wax, all the hair is removed from the bikini area, including all hair underneath.  This is a specialist form of waxing and requires specialist waxing training to ensure that the hairs are removed in the safest and most comfortable way.  You will be provided with disposable knickers for your treatment.  This helps to stretch the skin in the correct way to ensure the hair is removed with the least discomfort.  The method of waxing is different from normal bikini waxes and smaller areas are worked on, so it takes slightly longer.

It is my first Bikini wax – could I have a Hollywood?
If it is your first time waxing, we would recommend starting with a normal bikini and working your way up to a Hollywood.

Why does my skin go red after waxing?
Often the skin will appear red after waxing.  This is a common reaction and is caused by blood coming to the surface after the hairs have been removed.  Any redness of the skin should disappear within 24 – 48 hours.  Applying a topical cream such as Australian Bodycare Hand & Body Lotion (£7.50 for 200ml) can soothe the skin and calm any redness.

I have heard about diseases that you can catch through waxing – is it safe?
There have been reports of people catching diseases through waxing, although this is apparently extremely rare and is as a result of cross-contamination between the wax pot and spatulas in salons where the spatulas are re-used and not disposed of between clients.  Although PURE have used the wax pot system in the past, we always used fresh disposable spatulas for every client.  PURE is always concerned with the safety of its clients, so in 2005 we moved all of our waxing over to the PhD system, a new technology waxing system.  With this system, the wax comes in a tube and a disposable applicator head is applied for each client, which has a special system to ensure that there is no cross-contamination of wax or applicators.   This method is the safest method of waxing available today, and PURE uses this system for all waxing, including bikini areas.

I have heard that hot waxing is better for the bikini area – why do you not use the hot wax system?
The hot wax system is said to be better than other waxing systems for the bikini area, because the heat of the wax opens the pores, allowing the hairs to be removed easier and therefore making it less painful.  This is true in theory, but after much research, PURE has not found any conclusive evidence to say that this method of waxing is definitely better for bikini waxing.  On the downside, a hot wax system is less hygienic than other waxing systems because the heat of the wax, and the fact that it is applied with fingers or spatulas makes it much less hygienic, a factor that we are particularly concerned about for the bikini area.  The preference for hot wax seems to be a personal one, down to the preference of the individual being waxed.  Clients who have switched to PURE and the PhD system of waxing, have said to us that they see either no difference or reduced levels of discomfort after having the PhD system.

Do you do men’s ‘back, sack & crack’ waxing?
We do not currently offer 'back, sack and crack' waxing for men.  Again this type of waxing requires specialist training, and we would recommend checking therapist’s credentials if you find a therapist offering this service.  We do however offer all other kinds of waxing for men.  See our PURE for Men page for more information.

TINTING

What is eyelash tinting and why would I want eyelash tint?
Eyelash tinting uses a very mild peroxide to dye your eyelashes a darker colour, giving the illusion of thicker, longer lashes without the need to wear mascara! Imagine a mascara that lasts 4-5 weeks without smudging! You can also have eyebrows done too. Eyelash tinting is great for a holiday because you don't need to worry about streaking mascara and the treatment will last your entire holiday and beyond!  If you have never had the treatment before, you will need a patch test in advance to check that you are not allergic to the dye, but this can be done free of charge at any PURE salon. We recommend tinting for any time of the year, it only takes 20 minutes and you also get a free scalp massage. Why not give it a try?

TANNING

What should I wear for a tanning treatment?
We recommend wearing loose, dark clothing when visiting for a tanning treatment, as you don’t want clothes to rub after the treatment and rub your newly applied tan off!  When you arrive for the treatment, you will be given disposable knickers or briefs to wear during the treatment.  We recommend that ladies do not put their bra back on after a treatment to ensure that you don’t end up with strap lines.

How long should I leave before I shower after a tanning treatment?
We recommend leaving at least 10 hours before showering, to be sure that the tan has absorbed into your skin properly.  PURE uses SUN Labs tan, which comes with a 'guide colour', so you will look tanned when you leave the salon, and when you shower, the guide colour will come off, allowing your natural tan to shine through.

Why do you use SUN Laboratories?
PURE
uses SUN as it is one of the longest lasting fake tan products available, and it has a natural green base to the liquid so there is no danger of getting that ‘orange kissed’ look.  It also comes in two colours so you can tailor the colour to suit your needs.  If you want to go really dark, there is also an option to add tan intensifier.  You can also purchase SUN at PURE to use at home, and your tan will last even longer if you keep it topped up with colour every 3 to 4 days.

MASSAGE

Do I have to take all of my clothes off for a massage treatment?
When you arrive for your treatment, you will be shown into the treatment room where your massage is to take place, and you will find space to remove your clothes.  You should leave your briefs on, and if you are having a back, neck and shoulder massage, there is no need to take your lower-half clothing off, but we do find it is a more comfortable feeling if you take all of your clothes off apart from your briefs/knickers.  You will be covered in towels for the treatment and the therapist will move the towels during the treatment in order to work on different areas of the body.  Ladies should remove their bra when having a massage so that it does not get in the way during the treatment.  Your therapist will cover you in towels throughout the treatment.

SPA

What should I bring with me to the spa?
Just bring yourself – we will take care of the rest!  When you arrive, we will take your coat to hang in our cloakroom and the receptionist will escort you to the spa changing rooms, where she will hand you a locker key and explain where everything is.  In your locker you will find a PURE robe and slippers.  The slippers are complimentary and yours to take home at the end of your visit.  Take your clothes off down to your underwear and leave them in your locker and put your robe and slipper on.  Make your way to the relaxation area where you will be greeted by your therapist.

How long will I be at the spa?
The times quoted in our spa therapy menu are for the treatment only.  We recommend allowing at least an extra 15 minutes prior to your treatment and 30 minutes after your treatment to get the most out of your visit to the spa.
Your therapist will spend time with you before your treatment in consultation so that she can tailor the treatment to best suit your needs.

GENERAL

Where is PURE?
PURE currently has three locations in Edinburgh and Glasgow, Scotland a city centre based contemporary beauty salon on Lothian Road Edinburgh, a beauty salon and day spa in Ocean Terminal Edinburgh and a beauty salon and day spa in the Silverburn shopping centre in Glasgow.

Is there parking at your Lothian Road salon?
The nearest parking to our Lothian Road salon is the public car park underneath the Scottish Widows offices round the corner from the salon in Semple Street.  If you are driving up Lothian Road away from town, you need to turn right at Woolworths and continue round the road into Semple Street.  The car park is first left into Semple Street.

If you are coming from Tollcross, you need to head either left or straight across Tollcross into the road that goes past the fire station – don’t go straight down Lothian Road or you won’t be able to turn off.  Now you just need to go straight and turn right at the traffic lights onto Semple Street.  The car park is first left.

Where are you on Lothian Road?
We are situated on the right hand side if you are heading up from Princes Street, the same side as the Sheraton Hotel and Odeon Cinema.  We are less than half a mile from Princes Street, just past the Odeon, near to Woolworths.

Where are you at Ocean Terminal?
We are situated on the second floor, just opposite the entrance to Britannia, at the Debenhams end of the shopping centre.  There are escalators in the middle of the mall which go to the second floor and lifts in Debenhams and next to Britannia.  There is ample free parking in both surface and multi-storey car parks.

Where are you at Silverburn?
We are situated on the first floor next to Debenhams and opposite the centre main entrance in The Square.  There is a staircase and lifts that bring you up to the salon entrance.  There is ample free parking in both surface and multi-storey car parks.  If you are parking in the multi-storey car park, park on level 2 or level 4 at the Debehams end of the car park for easy access to PURE.
